From Woman to Mother
The thought of women sharing their birth stories and practical wisdom seemed like
such a timely idea. Certainly, as I prepared for the birth of my first child, I listened to oth-
er women talk about their birth experiences. I gathered tidbits of information that were
valuable when it was my time to experience labor and delivery.
As women we try to balance family, children, relationships, and careers. In the
midst of our harried lives, we never notice that there is no community of women support-
ing us. Long gone are the days of sewing circles. We no longer are able to spend a large
amount of time with the older generation of women in our families. There are very few
"women only" clubs, or social groups. How can we learn from each other when life has
evolved to keep us apart?
This book is an attempt for a community of women (mothers) to share their wis-
dom and experience with other women. Think of this book as a room full of mothers and
you are their audience. Enjoy as each mother tells her story with her own nuance and
vernacular. Take from their stories the tidbits that may help you as you prepare for mo-
therhood or recall your own experiences.
A reference section has been included to assist in answering questions and looking
up information. The information in this book cannot replace the personalized care pro-
vided by your doctor or health care professional.
The women in these stories are recalling their own experience exactly how they
remember them. Your experience will be equally unique and exciting.
I believe Labor and delivery is a pivotal point in a woman's life and should not go undocumented. I love to
read and listen to women tell their stories. If you would like your birth story to be considered for publication in:
